In the Five Variants, Vaughan Williams explores five different versions of this beautiful folk song which made such a profound impression on him. It was performed at his memorial service in Westminster Abbey in 1958. The concert continues with some of the most iconic works for string ensemble and ends, as it began, with another great European composer’s tribute to his national folk music.
*This is the third educational project organised by WCC involving the town’s two secondary schools.
The American violinist Sean Riley is an alumnus of both the Julliard and Aspen Schools of Music. He has studied with Kyung Wha Chung and worked with Bernard Haitink, James Levine and Pierre Boulez. Awarded an MA in performance, he is currently studying for a doctorate at the Royal College Of Music.

Mendelssohn. Piano Trio No 1 in D minor.
Ravel. Piano Trio in A minor.
This concert explores the changing nature of the piano trio from its classical origins through the romantic era and ending with one of the most famous trios from the twentieth century.
After studying in London, they formed their trio in 2009. They are currently ’Artists in Residence’ at Wolfson College, Oxford. Having performed at the Bath International Festival in 2012, they made their debut at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
‘The fine Fournier Trio made me keen to hear more of them’, wrote Hilary Finch in The Times after their Purcell Room Concert in November 2011. They were awarded the second prize and audience prize at the Trondheim International Festival in the same year.

Bach. Sonata for Violin and Piano no 4 in C minor BWV 1017.
Beethoven. String Trio in G major Op 9 No 1.
Brahms. Piano Quintet in F minor Op 34*.
Galya begins her recital with this beautiful but rarely performed sonata. These Bach sonatas are overshadowed by their more famous cousins, the solo sonatas and partitas. The ensemble continues with the first of Beethoven's String Trios Op 9, written in his mid twenties soon after he arrived in Vienna and they conclude the concert and the season with Brahms’ magnificent and powerful chamber work, his Piano Quintet.
This versatile London based ensemble has performed throughout the UK and Europe including the Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room and Kings’ Place. They have also studied with Susan Tomes of the Florestan Trio.
They release their first CD on the Music Chamber Label in 2012. They are returning to Woodbridge, following their stunning performance last year.
Charlotte studied at the Royal Academy of Music and also with Gyorgy Pauk. She won 2nd prize at the Wieniawski International Violin Competition and performs with the Castalian String Quartet and the Chiaroscuro Piano Trio.
